Here are a few of the cards that go out in celebration of the new year. For 2024 and 2023 I mostly used foundry fonts. Otherwise, I’ve hand lettered or designed the type. 2021 is from a woodblock print layout (inset image).
As you can see the style of the cards take from different periods for inspiration, the last two years being primarily Art Deco. However, it may be argued that 2024 infuses other trends concurrent with Deco, like late Art Nouveau and Japanese influences circulating Paris during that era. A lot of people still find interest in how the transition from the 19th to 20th century impacted design of all types. Prior to the Arts and Crafts movement design had gotten pretty stale, and even flat out ugly. Thanks to William Morris, his peers and especially associates, the appearance of the human made world stopped being predominantly piloted by just speed and industrial process. Thoughtfulness returned to the world of design, both to address what had gone missing, and what was soon to arrive.
